The Salzkammergut is a resort area in Austria, spans the federal states of Upper Austria (Oberösterreich). Salzkammergut is not an official administrative division of Austria and as such has no clear borders. 3 states and 8 regions meld the Salzkammergut to one of the most beautiful places in Austria. The historical term referred not to a region but to specific possessions (salt mines) of the Habsburg Monarchy within the region.

Here are some of the most popular tourist destinations in the Salzkammergut region:

Hallstatt (map) is a picturesque village situated on the shore of the Hallstätter See (Lake Hallstatt), known for its well-preserved historic buildings and stunning alpine scenery. The village is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

St. Wolfgang (map) is a charming village situated on the shores of the Wolfgangsee (Lake Wolfgang), known for its stunning views and historic buildings, including the famous St. Wolfgang Church. The village is also a popular starting point for hiking and biking trails in the region.

Bad Ischl (map) is a historic spa town located in the heart of the Salzkammergut region, known for its thermal springs and charming old town. The town was a favorite vacation spot of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I and is home to many historic buildings, including the Kaiservilla, the former summer residence of the emperor.

Gosau (map) is a small village located in the Gosau Valley, known for its stunning alpine scenery and outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and skiing. The village is also home to the Gosauseen (map), a set of three beautiful lakes surrounded by mountains.

The Wolfgangsee (map) is a crystal-clear lake located in the heart of the Salzkammergut region, known for its stunning alpine scenery and outdoor activities, including swimming, boating, and hiking. The lake is surrounded by charming villages, including St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen.

The Traunsee (map) is another beautiful lake located in the Salzkammergut region, known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning mountain scenery. The lake is surrounded by charming villages, including Gmunden (map) and Traunkirchen.

The Dachstein Glacier (map) is a popular tourist destination in the Salzkammergut region, known for its stunning views and outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and climbing. The glacier is also home to the Dachstein Skywalk, a stunning viewing platform with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

The regional train has a comprehensive service running through the heart of the Salzkammergut and on into Styria. This provides easy access to the region from both Salzburg and Vienna, passing through Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Bad Goisern, Hallstatt and Obertraun.

I would however suggest car hire as the best way in which to explore this fascinating region. This gives you the freedom to explore area such as Gosausee (map) and St Wolfgangsee (map), not accessible by train.
