Villach is the second largest town in the state of Carinthia, lies near the frontiers of Italy and Slovenia in the heart of Austria’s mountainous southern region. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery the town’s top tourist attractions. Many Roman artifacts have been discovered in the city and its vicinity.

The Alpe-Adria Trail takes its hikers from the imposing Grossglockner in Carinthia to the Adriatic coast in Italy. In a total of 43 stages and around 750 kilometres, the long-distance hiking trail passes through the three countries of Austria, Slovenia and Italy and through three varied regions. The Alpe-Adria Trail is now one of the most popular long-distance hiking trails.

Its carnival (Villach carnival GmbH) is famously broadcast on public television throughout Austria.

Landskron Castle (map)the remains of the old fortress of Landskron are on the top of a hill, 676 m high. A great part of the castle was destroyed by a fire in the 19th century, but some parts are still there and a few halls can be visited. The view from the castle is wonderful. 

The bell tower of St. Jakob (map). The church of St Jakob (the parish church of Villach) has an impressive bell tower, 94 metres high. It is the tallest in Carinthia and its present appearance and height dates back to 1847. Visitors can climb the 239 steps to the top and enjoy the wonderful view.

Maibacherl (map). A hot spring, which only appears in springtime. The water is hot enough for bathing and is very popular with the locals. Entry is free. Buses and trains operate from the main station to Warmbad on a regular base. The hot springs were already known to the ancient Romans. Take bus No.1 from main station to Warmbad and get off in Warmbad. From there it’s only a 10min walk to the hot springs.

If you want to go out in the evening go for Hauptplatz (map) and the numerous small avenues that start there. You’ll find various small pubs and cafes.

BUS: Eurolines Austria / ÖBB / InterCityBusFlixBus are one of the leading long-distance providers in Europe. RegioJet are a private Czech coach provider.

TRAIN: The railways are managed by the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB. Wien Hauptbahnhof (map) – is the main railway station in Vienna.

AIRPORT: Vienna International Airport (map), located 18 km (11 mi) southeast of the city center. City Airport Train – non-stop airport transfer to Vienna. + St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport.

FERRY: Riverboats on the Danube include connections with LinzBratislava and Budapest, but are slower and more expensive than other options.

Slow Trail Kloster Wernberg.

Der Startpunkt dieses Slow Trails ist das historisch bedeutsame Kloster Wernberg, das von den Missionsschwestern vom Kostbaren Blut mit viel Liebe und Hingabe verwaltet wird. Ebenso dort zu finden sind zahlreiche Informationsmöglichkeiten zur regionalen Fauna.

Anschließend geht es entlang der Drauschleife, die in den 1970er Jahren künstlich angelegt wurde, weiter zur Drau selbst. Dieses daraus entstandene Gebiet hat sich zu einem der wichtigsten Vogelgebiete Kärntens entwickelt und beheimatet aktuell mehr als 127 Vogelarten.
